Mirror Temperature Sensors Explained

Mirror Temperature Sensors Explained

A mirror temperature sensor, also known as an ambient air temperature sensor, measures the outside air temperature. It is usually built into the underside of the passenger‑side or driver‑side door mirror and sends real‑time data to the dashboard and climate control system.

What They Are

Small sensors that provide accurate outside temperature readings to improve safety and comfort while driving.

Why They Matter

  • Dashboard display: Shows outside temperature directly on the dashboard or rearview mirror.

  • Climate control: Helps the automatic system adjust heating and cooling efficiently.

  • Ice warning: Alerts drivers when temperatures drop to or below 37°F (3°C), warning of possible icy roads.

How They Work

  • Embedded sensor: Continuously measures ambient air temperature.

  • Data transfer: Sends readings to the vehicle’s electronic systems.

  • Integration: Works with climate control and safety alerts simultaneously.
